Quennell, Peter (1905 - 1994)

Poet, historian, biographer, and editor, and the son of social historians Marjorie and C. H. B. Quennell, was educated at Berkhamsted Grammar School and Balliol College, Oxford. He was editor of the Cornhill Magazine (1944-51) and of History Today (1951-79). His first volume, Masques and Poems (1922), was followed by many other works, including Four Portraits (1945; studies of Boswell, Gibbon, Sterne, and Wilkes) and works on Pope, Byron, Ruskin, and Dr Johnson. The Marble Foot (1976) is a volume of autobiography.
